THE ORIGINAL PERISCOPICA
Acquired by the state owned Alfa Romeo as a semi independent entity, Autodelta became Alfas official race team, ready to bring the iconic name back to the podium. Lead by Ing. Carlo Chiti, who had been stated as the most ingenious Italian mechanical & aerodynamic designer of the time the new generation of Corsa cars, would be known at the Tipo 33.
Proposed as a mid engined, light construction, two seater to race in sportscar prototype competitions, the Tipo 33 utilised a radical Alfa Romeo developed chassis, much to the chagrin of the Alfa engineers who had designed it, but were not put in charge of Autodelta, nor the project.
Initially a 4 cylinder TZ engine was planned, however an all new lightweight alloy 2 litre, quad cam V8, utilising Lucas fuel injection was put into production, producing far superior power (270 bhp in race trim) while maintaining the lack of weight.
The chassis, consisting of a Magnesium cast front birdcage and rear arms was supported by a large diameter, tubular H section centre, fitted with an aerodynamic, lightweight fibreglass body, allowing a grid weight of just 580kg!
Upon debut at the Belgium Fléron hill climb in March 1967, the prototype Tipo 33/2 (2 for 2 litre) won the event outright, sparking mass enthusiasm for the project. A total of 6 Fléron bodied Tipo 33 would be built, with the 1968 Daytona generation of the Tipo 33/2 obtaining supremacy in the 2 litre class after a few updates to the inherited Alfa suspension.
This example has been constructed with an exacting reproduction Aluminium chassis, replacing the original style Magnesium due to its fragility, porosity and safety concerns, fitted with what is to be believed as an original Autodelta body from the collection of Giovanni Giordanengo, a close friend of Carlo Chitis and the coachbuilder who was entrusted with the Fléron winning Tipo 33/2 for restoration!
With its connection to the original 2 litre V8, an Alfa Romeo Montreal, quad cam V8 was the only sensible choice for power plant. Enlarged to 2.6L, featuring dry sump lubrication, an internal chain driven water pump, tungsten counter weights, Jenvey efi through individual throttle bodies, 8 coil packs, MoTec management, ported heads (40mm inlet, 36mm exhaust, 7mm stems), Colombo & Bariani camshafts (44/78, 74/44, 13mm lift), Argo connecting rods designed for 9,000rpm, forged pistons, 11.3:1 compression, a steel flywheel and a single plate ceramic clutch this Montreal V8 is far from standard.
A supplied dyno sheet from Melbourne Performance Centre, dated Feb 2020 shows the Fléron producing 183kw (245hp) at the rear wheels, with a strong spread of torque from 4,000 to 8,500rpm. The Tipo33/2 has since run three times at the Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix historic demonstration runs, but is now seeking a new custodian to get behind the wheel and show off its beauty and prowess.
An original, full size bonded glass bubble windscreen is supplied with the Alfa, with the Mugello spec shorter windscreen currently fitted for reduced distortion in vision.
